Match, practice, private or semi-private lesson. Say what you saw. Smashie writes it up, remembers it, and sends each family their own player's report.

  • Every note lands in the player's file, so the next report knows where they left off.
  • Group reports: send each parent or player only their own line, or send the whole report.

For parents

Keep the care. Lose the heat.

Every tennis parent, and every pickleball, padel, TYPTI and other racquet sport parent, has had the drive home where a feeling came out wrong. Smashie helps you capture what you saw, say it calmly, and back your child's coach, so the relationship stays strong.

The parent version opens with the same price and the same $1 introduction as the coach version. Preview below.
Capture it · Take the emotion out

Say it before you send it.

After a match or practice, say what you saw and how you feel. Smashie helps you capture it, match it to what the coach is working on, or practice saying it out loud.

What you said"She played terribly and didn't even try in the second set."
A calmer way to say it"The second set looked tough. What felt hardest out there? I'd like to hear your view."
Share it · Keep the relationship

Say it so it lands.

Communicate with your child, the coach and the wider team in a way that keeps the care and drops the heat. Hard things can still be said, without the sting.

Anirban Dutta, tennis coach and founder of Smashie
Anirban Dutta
Why I built Smashie

I've been the player, the coach and the parent in the stands.

I played college tennis, and later coached college teams as an assistant at a Division I school. I've taught groups and privates since the 1990s. I also built a software company from scratch. My daughter Maya plays for the TCU women's tennis team and reached a career-high #94 in the ITF Junior world rankings. My son Jai plays for the IU Indy tennis team and is an ROTC cadet. Both play Division I tennis.

So I know what a coach carries. The lesson notes you never write down. The parent text at 10 at night. The boss who wants a report. The family at home who wants you back.

I also know the other side of the fence. As a parent in the stands, feelings run high, and the drive home can say too much. Smashie is for coaches, parents and players, so the player has a whole team pulling the same way.

I still coach today, with ladies' drills, club teams and a few high performance players. I built Smashie because I needed it. A coach should be able to say what they saw, send a clean note to every family, and get a plan when the pressure builds. Without giving up an evening to a keyboard.

Level up the player. And the team behind them.

What the research says

Better feedback, calmer programs, and smarter practice are not guesses.

Six findings from coaching, training and motor-learning research. They are why Smashie is built the way it is. We show how settled each one is.

Feedback works, if it stays on the task

Across 607 effect sizes and 23,663 observations, feedback improved performance on average. Over a third of the time it made performance worse, especially when attention shifted from the task to the person.

Say itSolid
6% vs 26%

Fewer players quit

In a Little League follow-up of 152 players, dropout was 6% with coaches trained in positive coaching and 26% without. Players also enjoyed it more and felt less stress. Win-loss records did not change.

Burnout has known drivers

Heavy workload, lack of recovery, and work-home imbalance predict coach burnout. Chronic stress is linked to weaker coaching and strained coach-athlete relationships. Most studies are cross-sectional, and evidence on fixes is limited.

Coach and parent relationships matter

A scoping review found that positive coach-parent relationships support young athletes. The authors say the research is still thin and call for more work.

Sprint training builds speed in young athletes

A meta-analysis of male athletes aged 10 to 18 found a moderate overall gain in sprint speed. Athletes past their growth spurt gained most. For those before it, the result was uncertain. It covers boys only, and the ranges are wide.

Cues about the ball, not the body

A 2021 meta-analysis found players who focused on the effect of a movement, like where the ball goes, learned more than players who focused on body parts. A 2024 preprint re-analysis found that after correcting for publication bias the effect shrinks to about zero. We offer these cues as something to try, not a promise.

This is research on coaching and learning in general. It explains why we build Smashie this way. It is not a set of results claimed for Smashie.

Built with care

Made for coaches. Safe for families.

One family, one player

Parents see only their own player's reports. One family never sees another player's history.

You approve everything

Nothing goes out without your tap. Reports for juniors wait until a parent has given consent.

Juniors stay protected

Messages with a junior always include a parent. No private one-on-one threads.

A guide, not a doctor

Smashie stays on coaching. It is not a therapist, lawyer, doctor or financial advisor. In an emergency, call 911.

Questions

Smashie for tennis coaches and tennis parents: your questions answered.

What is Smashie?

Smashie is a coaching and support app for racket sports. For coaches, it turns a quick voice note into a clear player report, helps you plan for conflict and pressure, and builds plans to help players improve. For parents, it helps you take the emotion out of what you saw, say it so it lands, and back your child's coach. The direct-to-consumer versions for coaches, parents and players are coming in 2026. You can join the waitlist on this page.

Which racket sports does Smashie work for?

Smashie is for all racket sports, including tennis, pickleball, padel, TYPTI and other racquet sport. Library topics start with tennis, pickleball and padel and grow from there.

How does Smashie help tennis coaches give better feedback?

Talk after a match, practice or lesson. Smashie writes it up, saves it to the player's file, and adds a Since last time note drawn from your own earlier notes. You review it and tap to send. Each family sees only their own player's section.

Can Smashie help me handle a difficult parent or other conflict?

Yes. Coach Navigator helps with parents, players, your boss, club business and your own energy. Say what is happening and get a short plan you can act on today. Smashie is a guide, not a therapist or lawyer.

How does Smashie help tennis parents?

The parent version helps you say what you saw and felt, turn it into calm, clear feedback, and share it with your child, the coach and the team without breaking the relationship. It also offers an evidence-based pack on fitness, strength and nutrition that backs up what the coach is doing. The direct-to-consumer parent version is coming in 2026.

How do I talk to my child's tennis coach without causing a conflict?

A good starting point is to ask what the coach is working on before you offer your own view, and to say one thing at a time. Smashie helps you capture what you saw, practice how to say it, and share it in a way that keeps the relationship strong. Research on coach and parent relationships is still thin, but a 2025 scoping review of 10 studies found that positive relationships support young athletes.

When does Smashie launch?

The direct-to-consumer version of the Smashie app, for coaches, parents and players, is coming in 2026. We are taking names now. Join the waitlist on this page and we will tell you the day it opens. Launch prices are the same for everyone, starting with a $1 introduction for 3 days.

Is there a version for players?

Yes. A direct-to-consumer player version is coming in 2026, along with the coach and parent versions. Players get the same price, the same $1 introduction and the same monthly hours as coaches and parents.

What age do you have to be to use Smashie?

Players 13 and above can sign up on their own. Children under 13 do not get their own login. A parent uses the Parent version instead.

How much will Smashie cost?

The planned launch price is simple. Try it for $1 for 3 days, one time per person. The $1 is non-refundable. After that it is $10 a month billed yearly ($120 a year), or $20 a month month to month. Coaches, parents and players pay the same.

How do Smashie hours work?

Talk time is the time you spend speaking to Smashie. Each guidance question counts as 3 minutes. Reading and typing are free. Yearly gives 4 hours of talk time and 2 hours of guidance time a month. Monthly gives 6 and 3. Hours reset each month and do not carry over. Coaches, parents and players get the same hours.

Who can see a player's reports?

Parents see only their own player's reports. One family never sees another player's history. Reports for juniors wait until a parent has given consent, and messages with a junior always include a parent.

Is Smashie medical, psychological or legal advice?

No. Smashie is a guide for coaching and parenting support. It is not a therapist, lawyer, doctor or financial advisor. In an emergency, call 911.

Who built Smashie?

Smashie was founded by Anirban Dutta, a former college tennis player and coach, a current USTA Texas board member and CEO of CompuMatrice. His daughter and son both play Division I tennis.
